I don't usually just link to a post, but Guy's post on Five most important lessons I've learned as an entrepreneur is really terrific.
We can't do everything. So what should we do? Asked in a more focused and perhaps more productive way:
"What objective, if achieved, would most ensure the survival and/or growth of our business?"
That objective is probably difficult. Maybe enormously so. It's probably easy to put off. Maybe until it's too late. But if everyone knows that objective, if everyone is focused on that objective, if everyone is investing most of their time and most of their effort in achieving that objective, good things will happen.
So what is that objective in your company?
Having been disconnected from the office for almost three weeks, I've returned to a towering stack of To-Do items. Luckily, I've also been reading Nick McCormick's delightful book, Lead Well and Prosper. In it he says:
"... choose one to three of the most important goals/initiatives and commit to completing them. Implement them come hell or high water. No excuses. When you finish, pick one or two more. Build on your success."
That's particularly good counsel for me right now and probably good counsel for most of us, most of the time. Thanks, Nick.
I'm back in the office after a sojourn in Europe. Traveling to London, I experienced Virgin Atlantic for the first time. It was remarkable. From the moment we encountered the first airline employee to our final farewell from the onboard personnel, every Virgin Atlantic staffer was gracious beyond description.
